Today on The Empowering Neurologist,  I interview Dr. David Ludwig. Dr. Ludwig is a practicing endocrinologist and researcher at Boston Children’s Hospital, Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, and Professor of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health.

Dr. Ludwig has published over 150 scientific articles, and presently serves as Contributing Writer for JAMA.

He is founding director of the Optimal Weight for Life (OWL) program at Children’s Hospital, one of the country’s oldest and largest multidisciplinary clinics for the care of overweight children. OWL serves as a home for research into innovative approaches to treat childhood obesity.

Dr. Ludwig also directs the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center. His research focuses on the effects of diet on hormones, metabolism and body weight. He developed a novel “low glycemic load” diet (i.e., one that decreases the surge in blood sugar after meals) for the treatment of obesity-related diseases.

Described as an “obesity warrior” by Time magazine, Dr. Ludwig has been featured in the New York Times and on NPR, ABC, NBC, CBS, and CNN, among others.

    I am going to have to read his book. The rats may have had no choice on what they ate, we do. I do acknowledge the great addictive nature of sugar. I am very addicted to Dr. Pepper very specifically. It is painful, but I have given it up for short times 38 days etc.

      Elizabeth, you can do this! Give up that horrible Dr Pepper… Detox from it! I changed my diet and went Keto and it took awhile (a few weeks) to change the cravings but they are gone! Do it, do it don’t wait. I used to take migraine meds for headaches and now I have 0 headaches!

      Lots of interesting discussion in the interview. I learn something new or reinforce something I already knew but don’t practice every time I come to Dr Permutter’s site! What a valuable resource. I’m thankful for the day I ordered his first book.

    I am a retired nurse. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease 3 years ago after my niece was diagnosed and said we should get tested. Before then I was hungry all the time. I would watch the clock to be sure I didn’t eat or snack any closer than 2 hours! Since my diagnosis and later going on the Paleo AIP diet(grain free and watching my sugars), I can go 4-6 hours before feeling hungry. I can also sleep through the night!
    I look forward to reading Dr. Ludwig’s book and I’ve found the information from your site so helpful. I thank my brother for giving me your name.
    P.S. Now who’s going to tie this in with pre, menopausal and post to help women get through one of the most difficult times of our hormonal lives?

    Great interview . . .I am ordering the book. An inquiry I have about my friends the microbiome. I am currently following Raphael Kellman’s Microbiome diet. I have been low carb and paleo for quite some time and find it interesting that such a high carb breakfast in the form of a smoothie is recommended. Does this spike my insulin with all this fruit and very little protein and fat (pea protein and small amount of almond butte)r. Are my microbiome happy with this radical change in my diet.

    I am not convinced that artificial sweeteners have a place in human diet. Actually I am convinced that they do not. Also kefir has a much greater variety of probiotic bacteria than yoghurt. I am not sure why but I have a feeling of slight disappointment. I expected more from a man with this many credentials.

      Beata, what more were you expecting? As a scientist, jumping to conclusions based on one study or another is unprofessional. It takes many years to turn the tide of existing dogma, even the death of those who promulgate it.

      With the availability of information today, one can support almost any viewpoint with volumes of data. In 100 years we will look at early 21st century medical knowledge as barbaric and dietary science as completely ridiculous. That’s the nature of science. It is always incomplete or just plain wrong.

    I hear you Elizabeth. I am addicted to chocolate bars. I eat a whole one every day. I try to eat organic, but my health food store has one with stevia for $4.59 and I usually buy non-organic bar without sugar (it has malitol)

    How and why does the sweet receptors on fat cells convert the artificial sweetener directly into calorie storage?

    I love the fact that you are bringing awareness to satiety- this is a critical component to our obesity crisis. The obesity crisis is not going to be solved with more willpower, eating less and exercising more- for sure.

    Also, love the fact your are promoting the incredible satiety and second-meal effect, along with the other immense health benefits of beans, including fermented soy products!! I swear by beans, greens and broccoli for breakfast!!

    However, I do believe there is one piece of the puzzle you may be missing.
    High fat dairy products are very problematic. They unfortunately provide an unnatural source of estrogen (particularly in the present-2016, since cows are routinely milked during pregnancy causing unprecedented estrogen levels in dairy fat), have no protective fiber and increase motor and IGF-1(increasing hunger and adipose tissue). All of these effects may be reasons high fat dairy significantly decreases breast cancer survival and is a risk factor for hormone-dependent cancers: breast, ovarian, prostate.. I beg you to rethink putting dairy in your menus and replace it with fiber filled nuts, avocados, flax, almonds, and chia- truly healthful fats!!
