The data being generated by scientists involved in microbiome research is truly mind-boggling in its scope. The good news is that some of the world’s most talented data scientists are now involved in this research as well. One such individual is Professor Larry Smarr, at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Smarr is a physicist, specifically an astrophysicist, and he is clearly one of the world leaders in the science of computing and super-computer applications.

Dr. Smarr has more recently begun exploring the human microbiome, using his own medical situation as a test case, in terms of applying super computer technology to the analysis of data he is generating. He has now extended this endeavor, looking at data generated from hundreds of other individuals as well.

Because of the aggressive application of data analysis in looking at a vast array of biometric markers that Dr. Smarr has accumulated, he has been described as personifying the “patient of the future”, as is described in his TedMed lecture that I would encourage you to review.

I want all of you to know that I was overwhelmed by my recent visit with Dr. Smarr at UCSD and what his work predicts for the future of healthcare.

No matter what field you may come from, things get accomplished best when there are new eyes to look at a problem, an “all hands on deck” approach, everyone is productive and working toward the same goal. Thank you Dr. Perlmutter and Dr. Smarr for all of your input and help in this new emerging science.

    • David Perlmutter

That is a fantastic insight Eileen. Thanks for sharing, and for the kind words.

    Dr Perlmutter
pero no he tenido mucha mejoria. gracias mil

I have a TBI and have to be on Keppra. I have read all your books and live a very healthy life and i am proactive againt getting alzhimers due to my injury. I am worried what keppra is doing to my microbiome! Do you think it is hurting me? I love buttermilk and drink it daily:) Wish i could get off Keppra!!!!!

    • Yvonne Forsman

Sorry to hear about your health problems. I didn’t know what Keppra was, googled it, it says it is for seizures. If you live in a state where medical cannabis is legal, cannabis is definitely healthier than any Big Pharma drug. There is so called Charlotte’s Web (almost no THC, which makes ppl high, but it has lots of CBD with healing property) . I do milk also, but only organic.

      • Deborah Marrs

Yes i have read about cannibis but the side affects are the same I am doing really really great! Only four seziures in the 20 years of having a severe brain injury, one reason i hate being on daily meds. Also cannabis is almost impossible to get in Georgia

Who knew that the last frontier was within us.

    • David Perlmutter

      I like that sentiment Gela!

So interesting!!! Thank you Dr Perlmutter. The world really needs to go back to organic agriculture b/c all the chemicals used in big scale production harm our microbiome and that’s why we are so sick. WHO declared the herbicide glyphosate carcinogenic. 1 in 3 men and 1 in 2 women will get a cancer diagnosis during their lifetime. There is a prognosis that in ten yrs from now 1 in 2 newborn will have autism. We are what we eat.

Thank you Dr. Perlmutter for discussing this very important aspect toward finding the cure for these diseases. I have Lymphocytic Colitis and do not find many doctors than know how to deal with me. I have somewhat cured myself with the help of your book, and also going gluten, grain, legume, and dairy free.
Please keep up the good work you do!!

Dr. Perlmutter, what are your thoughts on the human micro-biome and mental illnesses – specifically Schizophrenia? Would someone with this genetic family history possibly benefit from a Fecal Matter Transplant?

Go to website and check it out. You won’t regret it. Might save your life,

I will try to make this short — I have PSA and multiple other health problems; hypothyroid, mitral valve prolapse, GERD, PAD, etc. I am convinced that you are 100% correct regarding our microbiome but my Dr. is having me take sulphasalazine and I am afraid it may be interfering with my efforts to “repair” my gut bacteria balance. Is it?

Wonderful site….. More good information.. THANKS It is a body we start out with & add to .. being good & bad.. Chemicals along with all the artificial substitutes.. GMO on & on …” I just happen to be a family who picked up a genetic DNA disorder… After 20 years of struggling & I listening to Naturpathic Drs. I have gotteeeeen much better ….. Then my son who is a professional started failing …It ttook years to finally get A diagnosis of MTHFR ~` he is A1298C
Mom is hetero~ one copy C677T ~ other son double copy C677T . Son with A1298C struggles with neurological problems & been working wwith it a year.. only to find government or something is making it nearly to get his compounds ~ AND without ~~ he cannot function… wonder if DRS. have any input in this area… reason iI brought it up because Neuro Science DRS. test austism ADHD ADD schizophrenia dementia CFS on & ON..cases & many more disorders to find they are positive for this dna .. I kept having bladder infections repeatedly ~~ took my C677T test results to Dr. He was very pleased ~ resweached it & I cannot use sulfer drugs !!
So it is very complicated ……Just putting it out there.. Very few know about it .. thanks..
I agree always BEST to have new eyes & ears to look at it & get things accomplished!!

Does your book contain information on Adrenal Fatigue? Or labs with results in regards to enterobacter in abundance and endolimax nano cysts. Is this two items found in your book?

  • Rick Bailey

Is there a specific name of the stool test that Mr. Smarr used? I would be interested in checking my micro biome

No doubt this is a better system all hand on check. We are very hope full because now there are more scientists are now involved in this research as well. ..
